Best Christmas movies for the whole family

Watching Christmas movies with the whole family is an essential part of the atmosphere of winter holidays. We deliberately did not make a ranking like 10, 15 or 20 Christmas films, because everyone has their own personal preferences. And even the best movie on its 15th viewing may evoke less emotions than a new one, but lower rated by movie critics. That’s why in our list, movies are not arranged by rating, but by the time of their appearance in cinemas.

1. A Boy Called Christmas (2021)

A family fantasy tale, based on the eponymous book by Matt Haig, published in 2015. The main character is an eleven-year-old boy named Nicholas who lives in Lapland with his father. One day, the king orders his father and other peasants to travel to the North, where the elves live, to find something that will give people hope. A lot of time passes, but the boy’s father never returns. To find his father, Nicholas sets off on a journey with a mouse and a reindeer. Along the way, the boy faces many dangers. The film has many funny moments, magical creatures, and unique northern landscapes.

2. The Adventures of St. Nicholas (2018)

A family comedy set in Ukraine. The family of second-grader Artem, his older sister Polina, and their parents go to the Carpathians to visit their father’s old childhood home. Artem is eight years old, he believes in St. Nicholas and is waiting for presents. The adventures begin after Artem’s father falls off a ladder and breaks his arm. While his wife takes him to the hospital, their children stay home alone. Meanwhile, a burglar named Kaban, who pretends to be St. Nicholas, enters the house.

3. 12 Dates of Christmas (2011)

A Christmas romantic comedy. The main character is a girl named Kate, who can’t get over her ex-boyfriend. She is very sad and prepares to celebrate Christmas alone. In desperation, she decides to go on a blind date, after which real miracles begin to happen.

4. Love Actually (2003)

A comedy-drama that starts 5 weeks before Christmas and ends on Boxing Day. The events of the film begin at London’s Heathrow Airport. The film consists of 9 separate stories, some of whose characters are interconnected.

5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

A fantastic Christmas comedy starring the incomparable Jim Carrey. The first film adaptation of the book by American author Dr. Seuss. The story revolves around the green mythical creature, the Grinch, who lives near the town of Whoville. The townspeople don’t accept the Grinch because of his unusual appearance. Only 6-year-old Cindy Lou befriends him and decides to invite the Grinch as the main participant in the holiday event. This is a good family film about the fact that the greatest value is in the embraces of loved ones and the festive mood, not Christmas gifts. We also recommend watching the 2018 animated film of the same name.

6. Borrowed Hearts (1997)

A family comedy-drama. Sam is a wealthy single businessman living in a big house. On Christmas Eve, he invites his Mexican business partner, Xavier Del Campo, to visit for an important deal. The only problem is that Sam has no family, and Xavier is suspicious of bachelors. By chance, Sam meets Kathleen and her daughter Zoe and offers them to play the role of his family. Little Zoe wants nothing more than to have a dad. On the eve of Christmas, miracles happen, so the fake family can become real.

7. Home Alone (1990)

The most famous and highest-grossing New Year’s film of all time. If your children have not yet seen “Home Alone,” this will be a great opportunity to spend an evening watching it with the family. According to the plot, the big family of Kevin’s goes on a Christmas trip to Paris. Kevin is the youngest of the children, and by a stroke of fate, they forget him at home. Meanwhile, two burglars appear on the street. This becomes the beginning of real adventures. The film has 4 sequels, which we also recommend watching.
