A useful accessory that can help develop motor skills, strengthen muscles, and improve coordination in toddlers is a children’s massage mat. Unfortunately, the price of such mats at orthopedic salons is quite high. However, creating such a mat yourself is actually quite simple. We will provide detailed instructions and a list of necessary materials so that you can make a children’s massage mat with your own hands.

What benefits does it provide for children?

While many are familiar with the benefits of a massage mat for adults, the miraculous effects it has on a child’s body are not widely discussed. It begs the question: why should a young growing body use this equipment? Let’s list a few arguments that will make you think about such a mat:

  • It stimulates biologically active points without requiring any effort from the child.
  • In terms of pediatric issues, regular foot massages can improve blood circulation and cardiovascular function, as well as stimulate metabolism.
  • Furthermore, the artificial textures on the mat prevent the development of flat feet and promote the proper functioning of the musculoskeletal system.
  • It contributes to the development of the vestibular system.
  • Engaging with the mat improves the child’s mood and encourages them to explore new horizons.

But don’t rush to the medical equipment store to purchase this expensive device. Below, we will list the advantages of creating a DIY children’s massage mat.

What are the advantages of handmade technology?

Creating a DIY children’s massage mat is not just a way to prevent diseases of the nervous, cardiovascular, and other systems of the body, as we mentioned earlier, but also an excellent way to help your child unleash their creative side. When you and your child design and create a developmental mat together, you take into account their personal preferences and physiological needs.

In addition to that, making the mat yourself allows you to save significantly from the family budget. After all, most of the materials can be made from existing household items! Only a few appliques and natural materials may be needed to decorate the mat.

The best option for a stone mat

It’s easy to make a massage mat from stones by yourself. It provides a gentle impact on the baby’s delicate skin. So, you will need:

  • Rubber base
  • 4 kg of river pebbles
  • Epoxy resin

Instructions:

  1. Make sure that the mat and stones are completely clean before starting.
  2. Arrange the stones on the mat so that they fit together like puzzle pieces. Avoid leaving large gaps between the stones.
  3. Apply a small amount of epoxy resin to the back of each stone and press it firmly onto the mat for a few seconds each.
  4. Allow the resin to fully dry and harden before moving the mat.

Done! You can confidently use your handmade health mat as soon as it’s completely dry!

Tip: Choose smooth stones. Rough stones may detach from the base and exert excessive pressure on the child’s bare feet.

Pencil Massage Mat

Another variation of this item involves using colored pencils. For this, you will need:

  • 2 packs of colored pencils
  • Thick base material, usually denim fabric
  • Super glue
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Cut the fabric according to the desired size. This will be the base of your massager.
  2. Take the colored pencils and cut them into small pieces, approximately 5-7 cm long, using scissors. Trim the sharp ends to avoid any harm to the child’s sensitive feet.
  3. Apply glue along the surface of each colored pencil piece and gradually stick them onto the base of the mat.
  4. Arrange the colored pencils on the fabric base, ensuring they are close enough to each other but not too tightly packed. This will create a massage effect while walking. The arrangement of the pencils can be straight or zigzag, depending on your creativity.
  5. Allow the mat to dry. The drying time will depend on the glue’s instructions mentioned on the packaging.

Once dry, the homemade pencil massage mat is ready to be used!

Massage Mat with Grains

Nature’s gifts – grains – can also serve as excellent materials for creating a DIY massage mat for your child. However, keep in mind that grains are granular in texture, so the sensitivity during walking will be higher.

To create such a mat, you will need:

  • Grain Mixture: Buckwheat, oats, rice, and other types as desired; Sturdy fabric (to serve as the base); Small fabric pouches (can be purchased or sewn); Sewing machine or needle and thread.

Instructions:

  1. Start by acquiring or sewing several pouches of different sizes, which will later be filled with grains.
  2. Turn the first pouch inside out and fill it with grains.
  3. Hand-sew or stitch the open edge of the pouch, securing the grains inside.
  4. Repeat this process with the remaining pouches.
  5. Once all the pouches are filled with grains, sew them in rows onto the fabric base of our mat.

There are various variations of foot massage mats for children using grains available on the Internet. Some methods involve gluing the grains to the fabric base of the mat. However, we do not recommend this method as the grains tend to detach from the base during use, making the mat dirty and unsuitable for further use.
